Nutrient Neutrality

What is Nutrient Neutrality ?

Nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus occur naturally in the environment, however, in excess, they can be damaging to terrestrial and aquatic habitats.

Proposed developments within certain sensitive catchments such as the Solent, New Forest or River Itchen need to demonstrate that they will achieve nutrient neutrality. Nutrient Neutrality for residential schemes is achieved when the nutrient load created through additional wastewater from the development is mitigated.

Our Approach.

By designing developments alongside suitable mitigation measures, additional nutrient loads can often be minimised or avoided completely.

We have substantial experience working alongside multi-disciplinary teams including water quality experts, to deliver achievable, cost-effective solutions.

Reporting.

Using the nutrient neutrality calculator issued by Natural England, Ecology by Design can propose options to mitigate or minimise nutrient release through land use change and habitat creation. A “shadow” HRA may be required by the local planning authority to demonstrate how nutrient neutrality will be achieved.
